GENERATIVE AI POLICY
Generative Artificial Intelligence Policy
The Nigerian Journal of Technical Education (NJTE) acknowledges the increasing use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) and AI-assisted technologies in academic research, technical education, engineering, science, and scholarly publishing.
NJTE is committed to ensuring that such technologies are used responsibly, transparently, ethically, and without compromising the originality or integrity of scholarly work.
Policy Statement
NJTE does not permit Generative Artificial Intelligence tools to be used as substitutes for genuine scholarly authorship.
Authors must not use GenAI tools to generate, fabricate, or substantially produce the intellectual content of manuscripts submitted to the journal.
Submitted manuscripts must represent the genuine intellectual contribution and scholarly work of the listed human authors.
Scope of the Policy
This policy applies to all components of manuscripts, including:
- Article titles
- Abstracts
- Introductions
- Literature reviews
- Research methodologies
- Data analysis
- Results
- Discussion
- Conclusions and recommendations
- References and citations
- Tables and figures
- Figure captions
- Supplementary materials
- Cover letters
- Responses to reviewers
Permissible Limited Uses
AI-assisted tools may be used for limited technical purposes such as:
- Spelling correction
- Grammar checking
- Formatting assistance
- Language improvement that does not substantially generate or alter scholarly arguments
Authors remain fully responsible for verifying all AI-assisted changes.
Author Disclosure
Authors must disclose substantial use of AI-assisted technologies where such tools have contributed materially to manuscript preparation.
The disclosure should identify:
- The AI tool used
- The purpose for which it was used
- The part of the research or manuscript affected
Failure to disclose inappropriate or substantial AI-generated content may constitute research misconduct.
Prohibited Uses
Authors must not use GenAI to:
- Fabricate research results
- Invent citations or references
- Generate nonexistent sources
- Produce false data
- Manipulate research findings
- Create misleading images or figures
- Conceal plagiarism
- Misrepresent authorship
- Replace substantive intellectual contributions expected from human authors
AI and Authorship
Artificial Intelligence systems, including ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and similar technologies, must not be listed as authors or co-authors.
Authorship requires responsibility and accountability for the integrity, originality, accuracy and ethical conduct of research. AI systems cannot fulfil these responsibilities.
Reviewer and Editorial Responsibilities
Editors and reviewers must protect the confidentiality of manuscripts.
Reviewers, editors and editorial staff must not upload unpublished manuscripts, confidential peer-review reports, author information or other protected editorial materials to public or unsecured AI platforms.
Violations
Confirmed violations may result in:
- Rejection of the manuscript
- Withdrawal of the submission
- Request for correction
- Retraction of a published article
- Temporary prohibition from submitting to NJTE
- Notification of the author's institution in serious cases
